A thyristor is a four-layer semiconductor device, consisting of alternating P-type and N-type materials (PNPN) used for high power application. Thyristors operate in one of the following three states: Forward conducting, forward blocking or Reverse blocking mode. A thyristor is made up of three electrodes: a cathode, an anode, and a gate, commonly known as a control electrode.

Types of Thyristors:

Thyristors are a type of transistor that are used in power electronics applications. There are several types of thyristors, including:

  1. Silicon-controlled rectifiers (SCRs): SCRs are the most common type of thyristor. They have three layers of alternating P-type and N-type semiconductor material, and they are turned on by applying a positive voltage to the gate terminal. Once turned on, they remain conducting until the current through them drops below a certain threshold.
  2. Triacs: Triacs are similar to SCRs, but they can conduct current in both directions. They have four layers of alternating P-type and N-type semiconductor material, and they can be turned on by applying a positive voltage to either the gate terminal or the MT2 terminal. Triacs are commonly used in applications that require AC power control, such as lighting and motor speed control.
  3. Diacs: Diacs are a type of bidirectional trigger diode that can be used to trigger SCRs and triacs. They have two layers of alternating P-type and N-type semiconductor material, and they are turned on when the voltage across them exceeds a certain threshold. Diacs are commonly used in AC power control applications.
  4. Unijunction transistors (UJTs): UJTs are a type of thyristor that have only one PN junction. They are commonly used in relaxation oscillator circuits, which are used to generate sawtooth and square wave signals.

Applications of Thyristors:

Thyristors are used in a wide range of power electronics applications. Some of the most common applications of thyristors include:

  1. Power supplies: Thyristors are used in power supplies to regulate voltage and current.
  2. Motor control: Thyristors are used in motor control circuits to regulate the speed of motors.
  3. Lighting control: Thyristors are used in lighting control circuits to regulate the brightness of lights.
  4. AC power control: Thyristors are used in AC power control circuits to regulate the amount of power that is delivered to electrical loads.

Characteristics of Thyristors:

Thyristors have several characteristics that make them well-suited for power electronics applications. Some of the most important characteristics of thyristors include:

  1. High voltage and current ratings: Thyristors can handle high voltage and current levels, making them ideal for power electronics applications.
  2. Switching speed: Thyristors can switch on and off quickly, allowing them to regulate power with high accuracy.
  3. Low conduction losses: Thyristors have low conduction losses, which means that they waste less energy than other types of transistors.
  4. High reliability: Thyristors are highly reliable and can operate for long periods without failure.

Industries that Use Thyristors

Thyristors are used in a wide range of industries, including:

  • Power generation: Thyristors are used in power generation plants to regulate the amount of power that is delivered to the electrical grid.
  • Transportation: Thyristors are used in electric vehicles to regulate the speed of motors.
  • Lighting: Thyristors are used in lighting control circuits to regulate the brightness of lights.
  • Industrial automation: Thyristors are used in industrial automation systems to regulate the speed of motors and other electrical loads.

Popular Brands that Manufacture Thyristors

There are several popular brands that manufacture thyristors, including:

  • ABB: ABB is a leading manufacturer of thyristors, and they offer a wide range of products for power electronics applications.
  • Infineon: Infineon is a global leader in power electronics, and they offer a range of thyristors for various applications.
  • Mitsubishi Electric: Mitsubishi Electric is a Japanese company that specializes in electrical and electronic equipment, including thyristors.
